Discover New Zealand
Why New Zealand?
From the glowworm caves of Waitomo to the fiords and alpine lakes of the South Island, New Zealand squeezes an incredible amount of scenery into two islands. It’s compact enough to see both in 24 days, and wild enough to feel like a real adventure, especially alongside a group of people you just met.
Best time to visit
New Zealand’s seasons are flipped from the northern hemisphere, and there’s something good about every one of them. Summer (December to February) is the warmest, with the longest days for hiking, beaches and lakes, and it’s also the busiest. Autumn (March to May) is settled and quieter, with golden colours around Queenstown and Wanaka. Winter (June to August) brings snow and ski season in the South Island, plus long, clear nights for stargazing at Lake Tekapo. Spring (September to November) means waterfalls, green hills and fewer crowds, though the weather can change quickly.
Visa and entry
Most visitors need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before they fly, and pay a visitor levy when they apply. Australian citizens are exempt, but Australian permanent residents still need one. Allow at least three days for approval, and check what applies to you on the Immigration New Zealand website, immigration.govt.nz.
Currency
New Zealand dollar (NZD). Cards and contactless work almost everywhere, even for small amounts.
