MORE DETAILS

Is this a guided tour, or will I need to manage my own travel?

Travel Buddies offers a unique blend of guided and independent travel. We’ll take care of your accommodations, transport options, and the activities included in your package, but it’s up to you to book your buses and arrive on time at designated pick-up points or starting locations. Missed buses or activities aren’t refundable, and you’ll need to arrange and cover any additional travel or expenses. You’ll also have the flexibility to plan your own downtime and can add extra tours along the way (subject to availability).

What is a pre-planned solo travel package, and how does it work?

A pre-planned solo travel package is a curated travel experience tailored for independent travellers who want the freedom of solo exploration without the hassle of planning every detail. It includes a well-structured itinerary featuring must-see destinations, exciting activities, and essentials like accommodation and transport, all pre-arranged for convenience.

You can either book the above package as is, or you can make amendments wherever you’d like. If you want to do the tour in reverse, add on a few days, include extra activities, or travel by campervan, you can! Just book now or make an enquiry and we’ll create the perfect package for you.

What’s included in the package?

This package includes 20 nights of accommodation, coach transport from Sydney to Cairns (or reverse), 15 meals, and a range of unforgettable activities like dolphin kayaking in Byron Bay, a 3-day K’gari (Fraser Island) 4WD camping tour, a 2-night Whitsundays sailing adventure, a snorkelling experience on the Great Barrier Reef, and more. This of course varies depending on how you adjust your itinerary.

What is the age range for Travel Buddies packages?

Anyone 18+ can join and enjoy our tours, however the average age range is between 18 and 35. This is mainly because our chosen accommodations and activities are often catered towards social backpackers between these ages.

What’s not included?

The package does not cover travel insurance (compulsory from April 1, 2024), personal expenses, meals not listed in the itinerary, equipment hire deposits, public transport, or shuttle buses provided by activity operators.

Is this a guided tour?

No, this is a pre-planned travel package designed for independent travellers. You’ll follow an itinerary with pre-arranged accommodation, transport, and activities but travel at your own pace. A dedicated support team is available 7 days a week for any assistance.

How flexible is the itinerary?

The itinerary offers a balance of planned group activities and free time, allowing you to explore each destination on your own. While certain activities and transport are scheduled, you’ll have the flexibility to choose your own adventures during free days or in your downtime.

What is the transport method?

Transport between destinations is by comfortable coach, with the option to travel from Sydney to Cairns or reverse. You can also opt out of transport if you prefer to make your own arrangements.

What type of accommodation is included?

You’ll stay in highly-rated social hostels, such as Vali Byron Bay, Bunk Brisbane, and Gilligans in Cairns. These hostels feature great amenities like pools, bars, and central locations, perfect for meeting other travellers. If you prefer something a little different, let us know and we can adjust your accommodations as needed.

Are there any night-time activities or nightlife options on the tour?

Yes, Australia’s East Coast offers plenty of opportunities to experience some epic nightlife. In cities like Sydney, Brisbane, and Cairns, you’ll find buzzing bars, nightclubs, and live music venues. Byron Bay is famous for its laid-back beach parties and evening events. On group tours like the K’gari Tag Along tour and the Whitsundays sailing tour you will have group activities to enjoy, planned by your wonderful guides.

Can I customize the package?

Yes, this package is fully customizable. Whether you want to add extra nights, swap activities, or adjust your itinerary, we can help tailor the trip to your preferences. Why not check out our Custom East Coast Package Builder to start planning your dream adventure.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for any tours booked with Travel Buddies as of April 1, 2024. At minimum, your travel insurance policy should include: medical costs, emergency evacuation, and cancellation protection. This includes adventure activities and any unexpected situations, such as illness, injury, unpredictable weather, or cancellations.

World Nomads travel insurance provides coverage for over 150 activities. You can get a quote, file a claim, or purchase or extend your policy while traveling.

What happens if activities are cancelled due to weather?

If an activity is cancelled because of weather or unforeseen circumstances, we’ll try to reschedule it or find an alternative. If neither is possible, you’ll receive a refund for the cost of the activity.

How much spending money should I bring?

Most essentials are covered in this East Coast package, but we recommend budgeting about $50 – $100 AUD per day for additional meals, drinks, optional activities, and souvenirs.

Can I book accommodation before or after the trip?

Yes, we can help arrange pre- or post-trip accommodation. Let us know your travel dates, and we’ll ensure it aligns with your package.

When will I receive my itinerary and tickets?

Once you’ve established your itinerary and booked your package, we will send you your official tickets and a detailed itinerary, including a bus schedule (which you will need to book yourself), accommodation, and activity start times.

Can I meet other travellers before the trip starts?

If you’re keen to travel with a group of like-minded travellers, why not join one of our semi self-guided tours for a mix of flexibility in your travels while also benefitting from a ready-made social group? Otherwise, you can join Facebook Backpacker groups to meet others travelling at the same time as you.

Is this trip suitable for solo travellers?

Absolutely! This package is designed for social independent travellers. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet like-minded adventurers and enjoy group activities while still having the freedom to explore on your own.

Are my buses booked for me?

No, you will need to pre-book your buses yourself based on your itinerary, however we will send you our recommended schedule. All information regarding recommended times and bus stop locations will be sent to you along with your itinerary and ticket details.

What wildlife can I expect to see?

You’ll have opportunities to see wild dolphins, turtles, manta rays, whales (seasonal) and other marine life during your Byron Bay kayaking tour, Great Barrier Reef snorkel, and Whitsundays sailing trip. On land, you might encounter kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, reptiles, and native birds, especially in places like Magnetic Island and K’gari.

What should I pack for the trip?

Pack casual clothing suitable for warm weather, swimwear, sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and comfortable walking shoes. For overnight camping tours, pack light layers and a small daypack. If you’re travelling in the winter, be sure to pack a jumper as it can get a bit chilly at night, especially south of Airlie Beach.

Can I drive on the K’gari 4WD tour?

Yes, if you hold a full manual driving licence. If not, you can still join as a passenger and enjoy the guided tour whilst being in charge of the tunes and car games instead!

What are the must-see highlights of the package?

There are so many incredible spots along Australia’s East Coast. Our favourites are sailing through the Whitsundays, snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, driving 4WDs on K’gari, and kayaking with dolphins in Byron Bay. Each destination offers unique, unforgettable experiences that are absolutely worth adding to your bucket list. We carefully curate each tour and package to include the best possible destinations and experiences so that you can leave with a true appreciation of Australia and New Zealand.

What support is available during the trip?

Our amazing support team is available 7 days a week to assist with any questions or issues. Simply contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible to assist you.

Once the trip finishes, is onward travel planned or do I sort that out myself?

If you’d like to continue travelling once you’ve finished your Travel Buddies trip, why not reach out to your travel agent and find out some more bucket-list destinations for any onward travel – whether it’s continuing on where you are, travelling somewhere else in the country, or even a different country – we’ve got you covered.

Cancellation & Refund Policy:

If you decide to cancel your activities or accommodation for any reason, a 50% Cancellation Fee will be applied. (“Cancellation Fee”).

In addition to Travel Buddies Cancellation Fee, you may also be liable for any cancellation fees charged by the service provider as per their own terms and conditions.

It is therefore possible your cancellation fees could be up to 100% of the cost of the booking (for example cancellations made within 24hrs of travel).

The Cancellation Fee will apply in all cases where a tour is able to run.

Some examples include, but not limited to;

Change of mind.

Full terms and conditions here.

For instances that may be deemed out of your control, we endorse the recommendation of a suitable travel and/or cancellation insurance provider. You may wish to contact your travel/cancellation insurance provider to make a claim for any tours deemed non-refundable due to agent (Travel Buddies) or supplier (service provider) cancellation fees.

If a tour or other travel service is cancelled by the Service Provider, we will first endeavour to rebook you free of charge. If this is not possible, we will refund you the amount you paid for the tour or other travel service less any supplier charges. This full refund is subject to a fully refundable amount being given to us from the supplier who is cancelling.

We highlight here that all suppliers have different cancellation policies applying to your travel and that it is important to familiarise yourself with these at time of purchase.
