Day 1: Sydney Start
Your adventure begins in Sydney! Meet your fellow travel buddies and enjoy a day of city exploration. Start with the iconic Sydney Opera House, where you’ll have stunning views of the harbour and bridge. Grab lunch at a local spot, then head to the lush Botanic Gardens. Later, meet your Local Sydney Buddy and they’ll walk you through your trip details, answer questions, and give you all the tips you need. Don’t worry, dinner is on us tonight, so enjoy some good food and company.

Day 2: Sydney
Enjoy a free day in Sydney! We recommend tackling the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, with stunning cliff-top views, parks, and rock pools to explore. After a beachside lunch, wind down at Bondi Beach before heading back to the city before hopping on an overnight bus to Arrawarra.

Day 3: Mojo Surf & Stay
This small surf town will be your home for the next few days as you check into Spot X Surf & Stay for an incredible 3-day surf camp. Meet the Spot X crew and get settled into your beachfront accommodation. Take part in optional activities like kangaroo trekking, kayaking, or rafting.

Day 4: Mojo Surf & Stay
Rise and shine! Breakfast is served from 7 AM, and your surf lesson will start at 7:30 AM. Depending on the group size, the lesson will last 2-3 hours. Afterward, enjoy a free afternoon to relax, bask in the sun, or check out the area. You can also join in on one of the many free activities or enjoy a movie in the TV room. Dinner is served around 6 PM, and the evening is yours to enjoy with the crew!

Day 5: Mojo Surf & Stay
It’s your final surf lesson at Spot X! Make the most of your last morning on the waves and show off what you’ve learned over the past few days. Afterward, you have some free time to explore the town or relax around the campfire with your fellow surfers.

Day 6: Byron Bay / Kayaking
Arrive in Byron Bay, check into your accommodation for the next three nights, and get ready for an epic stay! Take a stroll around the town, with its quirky cafes and beautiful beaches, or check out the shops. Later, meet your local rep and head to Cape Byron Lighthouse for a sunset view at Australia’s most easterly point. The views of the coast from here are absolutely breathtaking!

Day 7: Byron Bay / Nimbin
Today is yours to enjoy however you wish! Start with a Yoga Class or rent a bike to explore the area. There are also options to book a snorkel at Julian Rocks or just take it easy on the beach. If you’ve booked the Add-On Activity, you’re in for a treat—today, you’ll go kayaking with dolphins! Get up close with these friendly creatures as you glide across the turquoise waters in Byron Bay. It’s an unforgettable experience!

Day 8: Cape Byron Lighthouse
Spend your final day in Byron Bay visiting its most iconic spots. Explore The Farm for a countryside vibe, or take a nature walk to Cosy Corner on Tallows Beach. As it’s your last night here, don’t miss out on the nightlife! Head to the Great Northern Hotel to belt out some tunes at the Piano Bar or hit the Beach Hotel for a fun night of dancing. For those who’ve opted for Add-On Activities, the Happy Coach will pick you up just after 10 AM for a visit to Nimbin—one of Australia’s oldest and quirkiest towns!

Day 9: Surfers Paradise
Say goodbye to Byron Bay and head north into Queensland to Surfers Paradise - the perfect spot for fun, relaxation, and adventure! Enjoy cute cafes, craft breweries, and some of the best shopping in Australia. If you’re a fan of the ocean, head straight to the beachfront to try your hand at surfing or just catch a tan. This is your chance to explore this vibrant coastal city.

Day 10: Brisbane
Next stop: Brisbane! hop on the bus to Brisbane, the capital of the Sunshine State! Known for its vibrant parks, awesome shopping, and buzzing food scene, Brisbane has something for everyone. After checking into your hostel, meet up with the Brisbane Happy Travels rep for a city orientation. From here, you’re free to explore, grab a bite, or hit up some of the cool bars in the area. Tonight, get to know your new travel buddies and enjoy a night out in the city!

Day 11: Brisbane / Australia Zoo
Today, you can tap into your creative side by visiting one of the many art galleries and museums near beautiful parklands, or you can stroll through the West End. It’s a perfect day to chill and do some last-minute shopping before you head further north. If you’ve booked the Add-On Activity, today’s your chance to visit the iconic Australia Zoo - home of the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin! See the crocodiles up close and marvel at the animals that call this place home.

Day 12: Noosa
Welcome to Noosa! This is your chance to unwind, soak up the sun, and explore this beautiful beachside town. Head to the iconic Hastings Street for shopping, quirky cafes, or hit up one of the many gorgeous beaches to relax. If you're up for it, you can stroll around Noosa National Park or explore the local surf scene.

Day 13: K'gari
Today is the day! Travel to K’gari Island and Drive along 75-mile beach, blasting the tunes, and enjoying the stunning coastal scenery. First stop, the SS Maheno Shipwreck—get ready for some epic photos and a bit of Aussie history. After lunch, it’s time to chill out at Eli Creek, the natural lazy river. You’ll float through the cool, crystal-clear water on a tube while the views around you will make you feel like you’re in paradise. Then, head out to your Dingo-safe campsite for a relaxed evening under the stars. Dinner and drinks will be served, and you’ll end your day with new friends around the campfire.

Day 14: K'gari
After breakfast, it’s time for more exploration. Head to Central Station, nestled deep in the island's rainforest. Take a scenic guided walk along Wanggoolba Creek, where you’ll learn about the creek’s historical and indigenous significance. After that, it’s off to Lake McKenzie—undoubtedly the most beautiful spot on the island. The white sands and clear blue waters are perfect for a swim or a relaxing sunbathe. After lunch, take a long but scenic drive along the beach towards the Champagne Pools, where you’ll find natural rocky pools surrounded by turquoise ocean. It’s a perfect spot for a refreshing dip and a few more photos!

Day 15: K’gari / Noosa
It’s time to pack up camp, but there’s still some sights left to see before heading back to the mainland. Drive through more rainforests and rugged tracks and head to Lake Wabby, a green oasis in the middle of the desert. Enjoy a refreshing swim and some time in the sun, then start making your way back along 75 Mile Beach to the barge. Once you’re back in Noosa, chill out and reminisce on your epic trip, before enjoying a post tour night out with your group at KB’s bar.

Day 16: Noosa / Everglades
Today is yours to choose, will you relax and unwind or continue your exploring? Spend the morning at the beach and grab lunch at one of the many cafes in Noosa. Additional Add-On Activity: Take a trip to the stunning Noosa Everglades, one of only two Everglades systems in the world! Making this day a very special one, you will canoe through a stunning place of serene natural beauty, bursting with rare animals and plant species. Don’t forget to pop into the local brewery to try a few of their many beers, produced with fresh water from the Everglades underground reservoirs.

Day 17: Noosa
Check out Noosa’s hidden Fairy Pools, which are nestled along a scenic coastal walk. The area is known for its beautiful views, so be sure to keep an eye out for Koalas snoozing in the trees. If you’ve booked the Add-On Activity, the Noosa Everglades awaits. As one of only two Everglades systems in the world, this serene natural beauty is packed with rare animals and plant species. Paddle through the glistening waters in a canoe and marvel at this natural wonder.

Day 18: Mackay Adventure Lodge
Today's adventure takes you deep into the rainforest at Finch Hatton Gorge, where you'll hike through beautiful scenery to find crystal-clear creeks and waterfalls perfect for a swim. Afterward, head to an iconic Aussie pub for a pie and a drink before continuing your journey to Eungella National Park, where you’ll have the chance to spot the elusive platypus in its natural habitat. Cap off the day with some drinks and a group dinner back at the lodge, watching the sunset over the lake.

Day 19: Eungella National Park
Wake up before dawn for a bucket-list experience at Cape Hillsborough National Park. Arrive in time to watch kangaroos and wallabies grazing on the beach as the sky erupts in color. After your wildlife sunrise show, enjoy a laid-out picnic breakfast right on the sand. Then join your guide for a headland walk—learn about the local Indigenous history and soak in sweeping coastal views. By mid-morning, you’ll return to Mackay, with time to grab snacks and settle in before boarding tonight’s overnight bus south.

Day 20: Airlie Beach
Head to Airlie Beach! After checking into your hostel, spend your free time exploring this charming beachside town. The central lagoon is a great spot to chill out and cool off with views of the harbor - if you're looking to take your adventure to new heights, you can opt for a 60-minute scenic flight over the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, including the iconic Heart Reef.

Day 21: Whitsundays Sailing
Get ready to set sail on an unforgettable adventure through the Whitsunday Islands! After departing from Airlie Beach, head to the northern tip of Hook Island and explore hidden reefs like Stonehaven Bay and Langford Reef. Spend the day snorkeling, swimming, and soaking in the sun before dropping anchor at a secluded bay for an evening of dinner and drinks under the stars.

Day 22: Whitsundays Sailing
Another exciting day of sailing through the Whitsunday Islands! After breakfast, you’ll head to a new bay to continue your exploration. Enjoy a hike to Hill Inlet for stunning views of Whitehaven Beach’s swirling sands – a photo opportunity you won’t want to miss! Then, visit the southern end of Whitehaven Beach and enjoy more scenic walks, swimming, and relaxation. Wind down the day with another unforgettable evening under the stars.

Day 23: Whitsundays Sailing
It’s your final morning in the Whitsundays, and there’s still plenty of adventure to be had. You’ll snorkel some of the best spots around, teeming with vibrant coral and marine life like turtles, manta rays, and colourful fish. If the tides are right, you might also visit the Ngaro Caves at Nara Inlet. After your last swim in this paradise, return to Airlie Beach for a well-deserved rest and an epic afterparty with your fellow adventurers.

Day 24: Airlie Beach / Skydive
You’ve got the day to yourself to either recover from your sailing adventure or revisit your favourite spots. For those brave enough to add a little more adrenaline to their trip, opt for the Add-On Activity and experience the thrill of a 15,000ft skydive! In the afternoon, enjoy some free time to explore or relax at the lagoon before gearing up for tomorrow’s adventure.

Day 25: Magnetic Island
jump on the ferry to Magnetic Island - a tropical haven famous for its beaches and wildlife. Check in to your beachside resort for the next three nights. Spend the afternoon soaking up the sun or spotting wildlife on a coastal walk.

Day 26: Magnetic Island
Today’s yours to explore! Wander the lush national park trails, chill at secret bays, or rent a ‘Barbie Car’ and zip around the island in style. Don’t miss the Forts Walk - a scenic trail to one of the island’s highest points with 360° views and a high chance of spotting wild koalas napping in the eucalyptus trees.

Day 27: Cairns
Travel to Cairns, known as Australia’s adventure capital. Explore the many shops and galleries, or take a dip in the lagoon - it’s the perfect place to relax after your travels, before heading to the vibrant Night Markets to cap the day off.

Day 28: Atherton Tablelands
Get ready for an epic journey into the heart of the Australian Rainforest with Uncle Brian’s Full Day, Fun, and Famous (FFF) Excursion! You’ll explore the stunning Atherton Tablelands, known for its breathtaking waterfalls and pristine swimming holes. Jump into crystal-clear waters, slide into rock pools, and don’t forget to try the iconic “hair flick” at Milla Milla Falls – you’ve seen it on TV, now it’s time to try it for yourself! This day is packed with adventure and natural beauty, and you'll head back to Cairns in the evening for a night of fun with your travel crew.

Day 29: Cairns
A free day in the city! With a social hostel and great backpacker vibes, you’ll find plenty to do. If you’ve booked the Adventure Pack, you’ll get to take the leap today as you partake in a Bungy jump! Feel the adrenaline pump through your body as you free-fall through the air. Smile, high-five the crew at the bottom, and check out the optional photo/video packages.

Day 30: Great Barrier Reef
Today is all about the Great Barrier Reef! Whether you’re an experienced diver or a first-time snorkeler, this trip offers something for everyone. Hop aboard the Ocean Spirit and set sail for a relaxed, tropical experience in one of the world’s most famous natural wonders. Explore the vibrant reef, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and enjoy the stunning scenery of a secluded sand cay. After a day of exploration, you'll return to Cairns in the late afternoon, just in time for a sunset view and another night out with your new friends.

Day 31: Cairns / Cape Tribulation
As your last day in Cairns, be sure to fit in any last minute bucket list items and enjoy a final night out with your awesome new group of friends. For those who booked the Adventure Pack, you’ll head up to Cape Tribulation in the Daintree Rainforest, known as a hotbed of wildlife and tropical plants. It’s an eco-warrior paradise. Once you arrive in the Daintree Rainforest, you will take part in a crocodile cruise along the river, spotting the prehistoric creatures in their natural habitat.

Day 32: Tour Finish
It’s the final day of your incredible journey down the East Coast of Australia. Say goodbye to your new friends and reflect on all the memories you’ve made. If you're not sure what's next for you, your local rep can help you plan your next adventure - whether it's in Australia or somewhere beyond!

Travel Buddies is not your typical handheld tour, meaning you will get to enjoy the best of both guided and solo travel. Travel Buddies will arrange all of your accommodation, bus sectors, and activities included in your package. However, it is your responsibility to arrive at the designated pick-up or starting points on time. If you miss an activity or bus, you will not be refunded, and you will need to handle your own travel arrangements and any related expenses. You are also then free to choose your own downtime activities and you can add on any additional tours as you go, pending availability. Although there is no official guide for this trip, you will have someone dedicated to your group in the WhatsApp chat to help out along the way.
A semi-guided tour combines the best of guided and solo travel. Travel Buddies handles key aspects like accommodation, transportation, and scheduled activities, but you are free to explore and experience each destination at your own pace. A Travel Buddies rep meets you at specific points to provide assistance, but there’s no full-time guide, giving you the freedom to choose your own adventures in your downtime. This allows for a blend of group and independent travel, offering flexibility with the comfort of support when needed.
Yes, you can – just reach out to ask a travel specialist when booking your tour, who can also provide recommended activities to take part in before your tour starts. This accommodation will be separate from the rest of your Travel Buddies group, but pending availability we will be sure to book you into the same hostel as at the start of your trip, so you won’t need to move hostels.
Anyone 18+ can join and enjoy our tours, however the average age range is between 18 and 35. This is mainly because our chosen accommodations and activities are often catered towards social backpackers between these ages.
Travel Buddies tours typically have a maximum group size of 18 travellers, however our minimum number is 2. This allows for a more intimate, social experience, where everyone gets to know each other while still having the space for individual exploration.
The tour price includes all accommodation, all pre-booked bus transportation, 22 meals, and key activities such as a K’gari 4WD Tag Along Tour, a Whitsundays Sailing Tour, and a 3 day Surf Camp. You’ll also have access to a dedicated WhatsApp group for daily updates and assistance from Travel Buddies reps at key locations.
The itinerary offers a balance of planned group activities and free time, allowing you to explore each destination on your own or with your new friends. While certain activities and transport are scheduled, you’ll have the flexibility to choose your own adventures during free days or in your downtime.
On the East Coast tour, you’ll experience a mix of Australia’s most iconic destinations and hidden gems. Must-see highlights include sailing through the Whitsunday Islands, exploring the Great Barrier Reef with a snorkelling or diving experience, a 4WD tag-along tour on K’gari (Fraser Island), and hanging out with kangaroos on the beach at sunrise. Other standout stops include the vibrant cities of Sydney and Brisbane, the laid-back vibes of Byron Bay, and the lush Daintree Rainforest near Cairns. You’ll also visit Magnetic Island, known for its wild koalas and stunning landscapes.
You’ll be added to a dedicated WhatsApp group chat on the Friday before your departure. This group will include your fellow travellers as well as a Travel Buddies rep. The chat is a great way to connect before the trip, share excitement, and arrange meet-ups before your official start date.
On the Friday before your departure, you’ll be added to a WhatsApp group chat with your Local & Travel Buddies, giving you a chance to connect before the trip begins. This chat will provide daily updates about where you need to be, what activities you’ll be doing, and include Google Maps links for easy navigation. While there is no guide for this trip, a dedicated group chat representative will be available to help you throughout your journey. Keep in mind, it’s your responsibility to arrive at the correct pick-up or start location on time.
Once you’ve officially booked your spot with Travel Buddies, we will send you a confirmation email. An itinerary specific to your trip, including bus schedules and activity times, will be finalised and sent to you at least 14 days before your departure.
On the East Coast tour, you’ll encounter iconic Australian wildlife, including kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, and various species of marine life. Magnetic Island is famous for its wild koala population, and many of the national parks and nature reserves you visit offer opportunities to see native birds, reptiles, and marsupials in their natural habitats.
No special permits or licences are required for the 4WD tour on K’gari (Fraser Island). You’ll just need a full manual regular licence to drive, and if not you can enjoy the tour as a passenger. You’ll be part of a tag-along tour, meaning a guide will lead the group, and you’ll follow along in a convoy. Your participation is fully supervised, so there’s no need to worry about driving requirements.
Yes, the East Coast tour offers plenty of opportunities to experience Australia’s nightlife. In cities like Sydney, Brisbane, and Cairns, you’ll find buzzing bars, nightclubs, and live music venues. Byron Bay is famous for its laid-back beach parties and evening events. Throughout the tour, your Travel Buddies rep and fellow travellers will help you discover the best spots to enjoy the local nightlife, whether it’s a chilled-out beach bonfire or a lively bar scene.
The amount of spending money you’ll need depends on your personal preferences and activities you choose to add. Most essentials are covered, such as accommodation, transport, and some meals, but you’ll need to budget for additional meals, drinks, extra activities, and souvenirs. On average, backpackers recommend budgeting around AUD $50-100 per day for extra expenses. This could vary depending on your spending habits, such as how often you eat out, participate in optional activities, or go out for nightlife.
From the 1st of April 2024, travel insurance is compulsory when booking Travel Buddies. It is important to have a travel insurance policy that covers you in case you get sick or injured (COVID-19 or otherwise), lose an item, or miss your tour. At minimum, your travel insurance policy should include: medical costs, emergency evacuation, and cancellation protection. This includes adventure activities and any unexpected situations, such as illness, injury, unpredictable weather, or cancellations. If you already have travel insurance, please understand that it is your responsibility to ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all of the adventure style travel you have booked with us.
World Nomads travel insurance provides coverage for over 150 activities. You can get a quote, file a claim, or purchase or extend your policy while travelling.
Each tour’s meeting point and time will be different – your official itinerary will be sent out to you at the latest 21 days before departure with information about your meeting locations. Your pre-booked hostel is available for check-in anytime from 2pm. If you arrive early, don’t worry – the hostel offers a secure area to store your bags, allowing you to explore the city during your free time. On the Friday before your departure, you will be added to a WhatsApp group chat with your fellow Travel Buddies and a Local Buddy, making it easy to arrange meet-ups before check-in. Your Local Buddy will also provide a time and location for a welcome gathering in the afternoon or evening.
We’ve chosen our favourite hostels and accommodation in Australia for you to stay at while on your tour. These hostels include Gilligans Backpacker Resort, Nomads Magnetic Island, Vali Byron Bay, and more. All are highly rated and perfect for a bit of socialising. You’ll get to enjoy wonderful amenities like pools, bars, big shared kitchens, and central locations as well as excellent staff. If an activity is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, we will try to reschedule it or find an alternative activity for you. If rescheduling or finding an alternative is not possible, you will receive a refund for the discounted rate paid for that activity.
For most of the trip, you will be in dorm rooms shared only with other members of your Travel Buddies group. In some circumstances you may be sharing a room with other travellers – however you will never be booked into a room alone without at least one other Travel Buddy.
Yes, all of your Greyhound buses will be pre booked for you. All information regarding times and bus stop locations will be sent to you along with your itinerary and ticket details at the latest 21 days before your departure.

Cancellation & Refund Policy: Refunds will be processed according to the following time frames:
Cancellations within 14 Days of the start date incur a 100 % fee.
Cancellations within 21 Days of the start date incur a 80% fee
Cancellations outside of these periods incur a 50% fee.
Please note that changes to the itinerary may occur due to weather, operator changes & cancellations. A suitable and comparable replacement will take place on such occasions.
If a third party operator cancels on the Adventure Pack, we will organise a replacement activity. If a suitable replacement cannot be found, a fee will be refunded.
