Day 1: Auckland Start
Nau Mai, Haere Mai! Welcome to Aotearoa, New Zealand! Today, you'll meet your fellow Travel Buddies and your Local Bud, who will introduce the itinerary and take you on a city tour to explore Auckland's CBD. In the afternoon, you can visit the stunning waterfront or hop on a bus to explore Mt Eden, one of Auckland's dormant volcanoes. Later, we'll arrange a welcome dinner at your accommodation, followed by a fun night out in the city. Get ready for an exciting start to your adventure!

Day 2: Waiheke Island
Today, you'll hop on the ferry to Waiheke Island, a stunning place north of Auckland with a blend of beach vibes and vineyards. With its own microclimate, expect warmer weather than the mainland. As you pass Rangitoto Volcano, keep an eye out for orcas and dolphins in the Hauraki Gulf. Once on the island, take the bus or speak with your Local Bud about booking a car to explore beaches, cafés, and vineyards. Be sure to catch the last ferry back for your final night in the city. Tomorrow’s going to be a big day!

Day 3: Waitomo Caves & Hobbiton
It's an early morning as you head to SkyCity to catch the Intercity Tour to Waitomo Caves and Hobbiton! Journey through the lush Waikato farmlands to Waitomo, where you'll explore the Glowworm Caves, travelling through tunnels of stunning limestone formations. Glide silently on an underground boat ride beneath thousands of twinkling glowworms. Next, enjoy a guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set, complete with behind-the-scenes stories and a drink at the Green Dragon Inn, before continuing to Rotorua, the Maori culture capital.

Day 4: Maori Cultural Day
Morena! Enjoy a leisurely morning before exploring Rotorua in the afternoon. You could visit Mt. Tarawera, take a peaceful walk through the redwood forest, or relax in the hot pools. At 4 pm, begin the Te Puia experience with a guided tour of the historic geothermal valley. Discover the stunning landscape of geysers, mud pools, and native bush, including the mighty Pōhutu Geyser. Visit the Kiwi Conservation Centre and explore traditional crafts at the Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. End your day with a delicious Hangi-style buffet at Pātaka Kai, followed by an exciting cultural performance.

Day 5: Free Day Rotorua
Today is all yours to explore Rotorua and enjoy its diverse activities. You could visit the breathtaking blue and green lakes, offering serene views, or get some thrills with a spot of white water rafting! If you're in the mood to unwind, soak in one of Rotorua's famous natural hot springs. From scenic nature spots to relaxing thermal baths, there's something for everyone. Make the most of your free day, as tomorrow you'll be heading off to your next destination and embarking on another exciting and scenic adventure!

Day 6: Sailing Lake Taupo
This morning, you'll travel to the heart of New Zealand's central volcanic plateau, home to Lake Taupo, the largest freshwater lake in Australasia. Stroll along the foreshore, admiring the stunning mountain views in the background. In the afternoon, hop on a sailing boat for a scenic cruise, passing the famous Maori rock carvings. Bring along a few drinks to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. For dinner, head out with your new travel buddies, and don't miss Taupo's unique McDonald's, featuring a dining room inside a vintage airplane - a quirky must-visit!

Day 7: Taupo Free Day
Today is all about flexibility. You can visit the stunning Huka Falls, take a 30-minute walk to Spa Thermal Park, or explore around Lake Taupo. For thrill-seekers, why not skydive from 15,000 feet and see Taupo from above? If hiking is more your style, head to Tongariro National Park and tackle the famous Tongariro Crossing, voted one of the world's best day hikes. You'll traverse two volcanoes and see the filming location of Mordor from The Lord of the Rings. Be sure to book shuttles and guides for this back in Auckland with your Local buddy.

Day 8: Travel Day to Wellington
Today is a big travel day, so start with a hearty breakfast at one of Taupo's cozy cafés before heading to the bus stop. As you journey to Wellington, you'll pass the southern end of Lake Taupo, enjoying its stunning scenery. The Desert Road is a highlight, offering sweeping curves and breathtaking views of tussock plains, rocky landscapes, and snow-capped mountains. Upon arriving in Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, we'll arrange a shuttle to your accommodation. Once settled in, get ready to experience the vibrant nightlife this city has to offer.

Day 9: Explore Wellington
Today is yours to explore New Zealand’s vibrant capital, Wellington. Visit the National Museum, Te Papa, to dive into the country's rich history, and check out the iconic Parliament buildings, known locally as "the Beehive." Wander through the city's cool markets and shops. For Lord of the Rings fans, a trip to Weta Workshop is a must. Explore the studios and props that brought the films to life! This evening, enjoy your last dinner on the North Island and soak in Wellington's lively nightlife.

Day 10: Welcome to South Island
Today, bid "Ka Kite" to the North Island as you board the ferry. Arrive early at the terminal to grab a prime spot for the scenic journey through the Cook Strait and the picturesque Marlborough Sounds. Keep an eye out for playful dolphins swimming alongside as you near the South Island town of Picton. Once you arrive, you’ll rejoin the bus and head to Nelson, the geographical center of New Zealand. Known for its year-round sunshine, stunning beaches, national parks, fresh seafood, and vibrant arts scene, it’s also a perfect base for exploring nearby caves, vineyards, and Abel Tasman National Park.

Today, you'll hop on a shuttle and explore Abel Tasman National Park, one of New Zealand's newest and most stunning national parks. This easily accessible coastal paradise is perfect for relaxation and adventure alike. With its golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs, and world-famous coastal track, you can spend your day hiking or hop in a kayak to discover beautiful coves and the iconic Split Apple Rock. This afternoon, why not indulge in the local wines - Nelson is close to the renowned Marlborough Wine Region, famous for its Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnays.

Day 12: Travel to Christchurch
Okay, big breath! Today is your longest travel day, but it will definitely be worth it! After breakfast, you'll board the bus to Blenheim, right in the heart of the Marlborough region. Since you’ll be there for lunch, consider stopping at one of the many places that offer delightful wine tastings. After lunch, continue your journey south along the stunning east coast of the South Island, where the mountains meet the sea. Keep an eye out for seal colonies resting on the rocks and enjoy beautiful views of Kaikoura before reaching Christchurch. Your accommodation is super central, allowing you to easily drop off your bags before heading out for a group dinner.

Day 13: Explore Christchurch
Today, you have the freedom to explore the city of Christchurch at your leisure. Start by visiting the historic cathedral, which was damaged during the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. While the city is still rebuilding, you'll quickly notice its resilience and the many activities available. Hop on a tram to colorful New Regent Street, and if the weather is nice, consider taking the bus to Sumner, Christchurch's beach. For those wanting to venture further, a day trip to Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula is also a fantastic option!

Day 14: Lake Tekapo
Today, you're heading to one of New Zealand's most stunning lakes: Tekapo. The breathtaking aqua-blue glacial waters are a sight to behold! You'll stay for two peaceful nights, ensuring you can enjoy the incredible stargazing opportunities, as Tekapo is designated as New Zealand’s Dark Sky National Park. You'll have the chance to see the Milky Way and beautiful nebulae. If you're keen on exploring further, consider visiting the observatory for an even closer look at the night sky!

Day 15: Aoraki / Mount Cook
Today you'll take a trip to the absolutely stunning Aoraki/Mount Cook, Australasia's largest mountain. Here, you can hike the Hooker Valley Trail and see the training ground of Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first climbers to summit Everest. This afternoon, take advantage of the stunning walks around Tekapo, and don’t miss the chance to visit The Church of the Good Shepherd, one of New Zealand’s most picturesque and popular wedding venues. Day 17: Skippers Canyon Jetboat

Day 20: Wanaka
As you journey to Wanaka this morning, soak in the stunning sights of Middle Earth while passing through iconic Lord of the Rings filming locations. The area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, offering breathtaking hikes and bike rides that allow you to unwind. Today we highly recommend experiencing the iconic Franz Josef Glacier, a must-see on New Zealand's West Coast. Begin your adventure with a shuttle to the trailhead, then hike through lush native bush and across glacial streams to reach the glacier’s terminal face, perfect for stunning photos. If you prefer a more leisurely day, take in the views from the charming township. For a closer look at the glacier, consider an optional Heli-Hike, which you can arrange with your Travel Buddies rep in Queenstown, allowing you to stand directly on the glacier itself.

Day 23: Return to Queenstown
Welcome back to Queenstown for your final day on the group tour! Make the most of it by tackling any thrilling adventures you haven’t experienced yet, such as the Nevis Bungy Jump or Swing. As night falls, explore the many classy bars with the help of your Queenstown Travel Buddies rep, who can recommend their favorites. Gather with your crew to share stories and laughs while partying the night away in this lively town!

Travel Buddies is not your typical handheld tour, meaning you will get to enjoy the best of both guided and solo travel. Travel Buddies will arrange all of your accommodation, bus sectors, and activities included in your package. However, it is your responsibility to arrive at the designated pick-up or starting points on time. If you miss an activity or bus, you will not be refunded, and you will need to handle your own travel arrangements and any related expenses. You are also then free to choose your own downtime activities and you can add on any additional tours as you go, pending availability. Although there is no official guide for this trip, you will have someone dedicated to your group in the WhatsApp chat to help out along the way.
A semi -guided tour combines the best of guided and solo travel. Travel Buddies handles key aspects like accommodation, transportation, and scheduled activities, but you are free to explore and experience each destination at your own pace. A Travel Buddies rep meets you at specific points to provide assistance, but there’s no full-time guide, giving you the freedom to choose your own adventures in your downtime. This allows for a blend of group and independent travel, offering flexibility with the comfort of support when needed.
Yes, you can – just reach out to ask a travel specialist when booking your tour, who can also provide recommended activities to take part in before your tour starts. This accommodation will be separate from the rest of your Travel Buddies group, but pending availability we will be sure to book you into the same hostel as at the start of your trip, so you won’t need to move hostels.
Anyone 18+ can join and enjoy our tours, however the average age range is between 18 and 35. This is mainly because our chosen accommodations and activities are often catered towards social backpackers between these ages.
Travel Buddies tours typically have a maximum group size of 18 travellers, however our minimum number is 2. This allows for a more intimate, social experience, where everyone gets to know each other while still having the space for individual exploration.
The tour price includes all accommodation, all pre-booked bus transportation, 4 meals, and key activities like sailing Lake Taupo, a Maori Cultural Experience, Hobbiton set tour, and a Skippers Canyon Jet Boating excursion. You’ll also have access to a dedicated WhatsApp group for daily updates and assistance from Travel Buddies reps at key locations.
The itinerary offers a balance of planned group activities and free time, allowing you to explore each destination on your own or with your new friends. While certain activities and transport are scheduled, you’ll have the flexibility to choose your own adventures during free days or in your downtime.
The Maori show is a cultural performance where you’ll witness traditional Maori songs, dances, and ceremonies. The Hangi feast is a traditional Maori meal cooked in an underground oven, offering a unique taste of New Zealand’s indigenous culture. This experience is included in the tour and provides an authentic cultural connection.
You’ll be added to a dedicated WhatsApp group chat on the Friday before your departure. This group will include your fellow travellers as well as a Travel Buddies rep. The chat is a great way to connect before the trip, share excitement, and arrange meet-ups before your official start date.
On the Friday before your departure, you’ll be added to a WhatsApp group chat with your Local & Travel Buddies, giving you a chance to connect before the trip begins. This chat will provide daily updates about where you need to be, what activities you’ll be doing, and include Google Maps links for easy navigation. While there is no guide for this trip, a dedicated group chat representative will be available to help you throughout your journey. Keep in mind, it’s your responsibility to arrive at the correct pick-up or start location on time.
Once you’ve officially booked your spot with Travel Buddies, we will send you a confirmation email. An itinerary specific to your trip, including bus schedules and activity times, will be finalised and sent to you at least 14 days before your departure.
On the Travel Buddies New Zealand tour, you’ll encounter some of the country’s unique wildlife, including the iconic kiwi bird, New Zealand fur seals, and several species of penguins, such as the Little Blue and Yellow-eyed penguins. In coastal areas, you might spot dolphins and even orca’s, particularly in Kaikoura. New Zealand’s rich birdlife is also a highlight, with sightings of kea, tui, and fantails, while the magical glowworms in the Waitomo Caves offer a truly unique experience.
No, you won’t need to drive during the New Zealand tour. All transportation, including bus transfers, is provided and pre-arranged. This allows you to relax and focus on enjoying the journey without worrying about navigating or driving yourself.
The physical demands of activities on the New Zealand tour vary. Some hikes are relatively easy and suitable for all fitness levels, while others may be more challenging. Your Travel Buddies rep can provide recommendations based on your fitness level, ensuring you choose the right activities for your comfort.
While standard travel gear like comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing is recommended, you may also want to bring specific items for outdoor activities, such as hiking boots for longer treks, a rain jacket for wet weather, and swimwear for water-based activities. Your packing list should reflect the range of experiences you plan to participate in during the tour.
From the 1st of April 2024, travel insurance is compulsory when booking Travel Buddies. It is important to have a travel insurance policy that covers you in case you get sick or injured (COVID-19 or otherwise), lose an item, or miss your tour. At minimum, your travel insurance policy should include: medical costs, emergency evacuation, and cancellation protection. This includes adventure activities and any unexpected situations, such as illness, injury, unpredictable weather, or cancellations. If you already have travel insurance, please understand that it is your responsibility to ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all of the adventure style travel you have booked with us.
World Nomads travel insurance provides coverage for over 150 activities. You can get a quote, file a claim, or purchase or extend your policy while travelling.
Each tour’s meeting point and time will be different – your official itinerary will be sent out to you at the latest 21 days before departure with information about your meeting locations. Your pre-booked hostel is available for check-in anytime from 2pm. If you arrive early, don’t worry – the hostel offers a secure area to store your bags, allowing you to explore the city during your free time. On the Friday before your departure, you will be added to a WhatsApp group chat with your fellow Travel Buddies and a Local Buddy, making it easy to arrange meet-ups before check-in. Your Local Buddy will also provide a time and location for a welcome gathering in the afternoon or evening.
If an activity is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, we will try to reschedule it or find an alternative activity for you. If rescheduling or finding an alternative is not possible, you will receive a refund for the discounted rate paid for that activity.
We’ve chosen our favourite hostels and accommodation in New Zealand for you to stay at while on your tour. These hostels include Lylo Queenstown, Haka House Wellington, and Adventure Lodge Wanaka. All are highly rated and perfect for a bit of socialising. You’ll get to enjoy wonderful amenities like pools, bars, big shared kitchens, and central locations as well as excellent staff. For most of the trip, you will be in dorm rooms shared only with other members of your Travel Buddies group. In some circumstances you may be sharing a room with other travellers – however you will never be booked into a room alone without at least one other Travel Buddy.
Yes, all of your Greyhound buses will be pre booked for you. All information regarding times and bus stop locations will be sent to you along with your itinerary and ticket details at the latest 21 days before your departure.

Cancellation & Refund Policy: Refunds will be processed according to the following time frames:
Cancellations within 14 Days of the start date incur a 100 % fee.
Cancellations within 21 Days of the start date incur a 80% fee
Cancellations outside of these periods incur a 50% fee.
Please note that changes to the itinerary may occur due to weather, operator changes & cancellations. A suitable and comparable replacement will take place on such occasions.
If a third party operator cancels on the Adventure Pack, we will organise a replacement activity. If a suitable replacement cannot be found, a fee will be refunded.
